Sparkling Book Club

Hope you had a great Halloween!

I'm missing my book club girls back in New York. They met this week without me-- as they should. I guess I need to find one here in DC!

I'm loving this beautiful book club meeting via The Sweetest Occasion. I hosted a lot (as you may have seen here), but they were never this fancy. It inspires me to elevate them-- should I find a new one!

Less Mess on Superbowl Sunday

 

Let's face it: Super Bowl Sunday is a messy day. The majority of Super Bowl parties are celebrated inside a home, and if that home happens to be yours this year, you need to prepare yourself for the inevitable. Dips will drip onto upholstery, chips and popcorn will be crunched into the ground, and drinks will be spilled on the carpet when everyone jumps up cheering during that final touchdown. Then at the end of it all, you will have a kitchen full of dirty dishes, plus pots and pans if you cooked everything yourself.

With all that in mind, here are a few tips to make your Superbowl party a little less messy:

- Put bowls full of liquids or dips on plates. Dips and things like soup or chili are known to run over, especially in an excited environment such as a Superbowl party. By keeping the bowl on a plate, any overrun will be captured before it can make a mess.

- Have an excess of napkins and wet wipes. This is a pretty basic tip, but one that is often overlooked. When you are at the store buying party supplies, buy way more napkins than you think you'll need, and keep wet wipes nearby. Most party foods are sticky, messy and stain fabric, such as hot wings or cheetos. By making sure your guests have every option to clean their fingers off, you really cut down the chances of someone accidentally wiping something on your couch.

- Give your guests adequate surface in which to place and eat food. The worst mistake you can make is to send half a dozen men into the living room to sit on the couch with plates and cups. Make sure they have a surface to set their food onto, or better yet, a surface in which they can eat over. Since they will want to be planted firmly in front of the television, coffee tables will work, but TV trays are even better. If you use TV trays, try having 1 for every 2 people, set sideways between them. This way everyone can get up without knocking over their trays.

- Don't fill anything to the top. A large amount of spills happen when carrying the "spillable" item while walking. Since so many people will be walking from the couch to the food table, only fill things 3/4 of the way (or less). This way it is less likely something will spill if the container tips or if the person is bumped into during transit.

- Try to buy as much as you can pre-made. Again, this is pretty basic, but a lot of people don't realize how many good finger foods can be bought pre-made. Most grocery stores sell things like hot wings, dips, vegetable trays, and sandwiches made fresh that day. Because of the quantity of food you'll need, and how quickly it will be consumed, cooking everything can be more trouble than its worth on this day.

- Use disposable plates and cups. This isn't just for the mess factor from the food, but also because if a glass plate gets dropped, it's very likely to break, which can be dangerous with a lot of people in the house. Also most people go back for seconds, thirds, fourths...and they get a new glass or plate each time. Buy a lot of plates and cups to help meet this need. If you are worried about the waste, check out places like GreenFeet, which offers eco-friendly food packaging.

- Keep cleaning supplies nearby. I have recently discovered that Resolve's Multi-Fabric spray and Tide's To-Go Pen do wonders when you've spilled something on your couch. Since it's very unlikely that you won't have any spills at all, keep cleaning supplies handy. Most messes won't stain if you treat them right away. You can even spray Scotch Guard on all of your furniture to give it extra protection.

A Little Man's Mustaches & Neckties 2nd Birthday Party

My son's second birthday was December 27.  I did not make a huge deal out of first birthday because he didn't really understand what was going on, so I wanted his second birthday to be a fabulous event. 

After going over a few different themes I finally settled on a Little Man theme.  When I found this invitation on Party Box Designon Etsy, I knew it was the perfect theme.

The Invite

I wanted my son to look like the Little Man that he is, so I found the cutest necktie t-shirt at Jam n' Jelli on Etsy.  During the party though he wore a necktie t-shirt I made to match Daddy and Mommy. 

I called around to every party store in the area looking for a giant mustache balloon or pinata, but no luck.  Instead I made one out of foam to hang from the ceiling.

I made the necktie banner using my handy dandy Silhouette SD.  (If you're into the cutting machines, like Cricket, you totally need to check out the Silhouette.  It does the same things as the Cricket except you don't need to buy separate cartridges for each new shape.)  Do you like the mustaches the birthday boy is sporting in some of his photos?

I made Mug-staches for the favors and filled them with hot cocoa mix and cookie lollipops.  I found a great tutorial for the mugs at See Cate Create.  I was so surprised at how easy they were to make and how little time it actually took.  I have no idea why anyone would spend $15 a mug to buy these on Etsy when I made 27 of them for $30.

I found the cookie lollipop recipe on Cookie Madness.  I used the Michelle Bommarito recipe.  The dough was very crumbly which made it very difficult to work with and I wasn't super thrilled with the taste either, but the birthday boy was a huge fan of the finished product, so I can't complain too much.

 My favorite part of the favors though was the necktie ribbon I made to close the baggies.  I'm pretty proud I thought of that little detail.

I also made mustaches out of felt served in beer mugs for our party guests.  Everyone had a blast picking their perfect 'stache and modeling it for the camera.  Even my unborn niece joined in the fun.  As you can see all the guests came appropriately attired in their neckties!

I made Chocolate (Root) Beer Cupcakes for the cake smashing event.  (Last year, I made vanilla cupcakes for my son's first birthday and I got in trouble for not making chocolate which is better for photos apparently.  I didn't want to make the same mistake again...)  The cupcakes turned out nicely and everyone, especially the guest of honor, quite enjoyed them.  I forgot to get a good close up shot of them, but I decorated them with neckties, mustaches, and "2"s.

I didn't take pictures of the rest of the food, but we served what I called, "Man Food."  My husband made his soon-to-be famous hot wings with his signature hot sauce and a honey BBQ sauce.  We also served up sliders, chips and dip, cheese and bologna and tator tots.  Everything a man needs to fill himself up.  I also had bottled (root) beer to cool down mouths after scarfing down the wings.

Another little detail I was especially fond of was the napkins.  I found these cute necktie napkins that went perfectly with the Little Man theme.

And of course, every Little Man needs his hat!  While the birthday boy wouldn't wear his hat during the party, he was all about modeling it for Mommy and Daddy later in the evening.

And just a FYI, chocolate cake makes a huge mess and if the birthday boy wants to help clean it up, you might as well let him because you know by his 12th birthday party he'll refuse to go anywhere near the vacuum.

Haunting Halloween Hurricane Candles DIY

I have been working on a few decorations for this year's Glam Goth Halloween Party. After seeing a few projects creating hurricane candle holders from dollar store candle sticks - this is what I came up with for Halloween!

What you need...

 

Glass candle sticks and glass cylinder candle holders - these were from Dollar Tree

Gorilla Glue

Assortment of trims, feathers, netting and skulls. These skulls are made of felt from Wilton - they are actually labeled as coasters and I bought them at Jo-Ann Fabric. Most of the Halloween trims are now 50% off!

I bought a few shorter candle sticks to make the finished hurricanes varying heights. First attach the candle sticks to the glass cylinders with the Gorilla Glue - let dry overnight. Using a glue gun or tacky glue attach the assortment of trims and feathers to the hurricanes. No two need to be alike. For a more kid friendly version, go with a pumpkin theme.
