Spring is here and Easter is right around the corner. We’ve collected some great ideas from creative mom bloggers that put a spin on traditional Easter-themed crafts. Try some of these mom-approved Easter projects to celebrate the holiday:
Color Easter Eggs Naturally
Nearly three years ago, Mollie of OC Mom, a blog dedicated to all-things Orange County, California, found out that her two daughters suffered from dye allergies and food sensitivities. Shortly after her daughter was diagnosed with the dye allergy, Mollie ditched the processed foods and made a healthy lifestyle change.
For Easter, Mollie recommends decorating Easter eggs with natural dyes. If your child has a dye allergy or if you’re just looking for a healthier, organic option, consider dying your Easter eggs with grape juice, beets, blueberries or onions. Since the dyes are natural, the eggs will have a softer hue than traditionally colored eggs. For a richer color, let the eggs soak for a longer period of time.
Pink: Slice up one beet into chunks and add four cups of boiling water. Stir in two tablespoons of white vinegar and let the mixture cool to room temperature. After it’s cooled, remove the beets and start dyeing.
Lavender: Simply mix one cup of grape juice and one tablespoon of white vinegar and violà, you’ve got a beautiful lavender dye.
Blue: Mix one cup of water with one cup of frozen blueberries. Bring the mixture to room temperature and remove the berries. Then stir in three teaspoons of white vinegar.
Green: Surprisingly, red onions make a beautiful earthy green dye. Peel the onion skins and simmer them in two cups of water for 15 minutes. Strain and stir in three teaspoons of white vinegar.
All of the dye mixtures call for vinegar because it helps assist in dye absorption. If a certain dye isn’t taking well, just add in a little more vinegar.
Send a Surprise to Your Loved Ones
Don’t forget about your family members who live out of town this Easter. Celebrate the holiday by sending your loved ones a surprise Easter basket filled with goodies. Or send them a beautiful bouquet of fresh spring flowers they can display in their home during their own Easter celebration. FTD, the online flower and gift shop, offers a variety of beautiful flower arrangements and a selection of gift baskets with an Easter holiday theme.
Additionally, you can send a handmade surprise to your family and friends. Janice, from 5 Minutes for Mom suggests having the kids make painted paper Easter egg cards. Create an egg template on a sheet of paper and cut out your paper eggs. Have your children paint the eggs with bright colors and fun designs. Use folded cardstock to make the card, arrange the eggs and glue them on the face of the card. Include a handwritten message to make it extra special.
Make Jewelry with Jelly Beans
This is a great boredom-buster craft for kids to do on Easter day; it’s also very easy. All that you will need for this project is a bag of Jelly Beans, a needle and stretch cord. Melanie from Artzy Creations offers a simple five-step process for making candy jewelry.
First, cut the elastic cord into six-inch lengths.
Then, tie a couple knots in the bottom of the cord, about an inch or so from the end, to make it easier to tie the bracelet once it’s finished.
Thread the cord through the needle. Keep in mind that younger children may need help with this part.
Then, thread the candy through the needle and onto the bracelet cord. It’s best to use a hard surface, like a tabletop for this step.
The fifth and final step is measuring the bracelet to your little one’s wrist. Once it’s finished tie it with a triple knot and cut off any additional cord.
