A Graduation Party

We recently threw a graduation party for a very deserving high school graduate named Blake. In the Fall, Blake will start his first semester at Illinois State University studying to be a Special Education Teacher. Over 100 people stopped by to wish Blake congratulations!

We set up tables outside and served a delicious spread of food catered by One World Cafe. For the centerpieces we used pomander balls make of white carnations. They look like pom poms! We then added Blake's varsity letters from tennis and basketball and pictures of him throughout high school.

Guests enjoyed various flavors of lemonade. Sodas and waters were also available.

We gave Blake a "Sweet Sendoff" to college with a candy and dessert bar. We had all of his favorites in his high school's colors: red and white. There were Hot Tamales, M&M's, Swedish Fish, Peppermints, Red Hots, Cake Pops, Red Vines, and Smarties (for the "smartie" who graduated with honors).

We also had red and white popcorn bags filled with white chocolate popcorn.

A family friend made cupcakes and cake for Blake's party. She even made a birthday cake for his 19^th birthday, which was the day after the party!

Blake and his dad made these custom bag games for the party. The "home team" was Illinois State University and the "visitors" were Bradley University, Illinois State's rival.

 

Congratulations, Blake! We hope you have an amazing year at ISU and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for you!

Graduation Party Details

EventLucky here to share some fun from my long weekend. Hope your weekends are full of sun and well planned parties!

My Memorial Day weekend was crazy busy, as my husband graduated from graduate school. His mom came to visit, so we threw him a little party...and I am so excited to share the details!

We knew we had a long day on Monday for the actual graduation, so we didn't want a party that would go too late (does that make us old?). We decided on a "happy hour" party from 4-7 PM, with snacks and drinks appropriate for pre-dinner.

I asked a friend to design pennants for me in my husband's school colors. She did such a great job! I printed them out on cardstock and cut them out for decorations.

For the menu, I wanted to play with the idea of a rolled diploma, so we made asparagus rolled in procuitto, hand rolled sushi (ok, we ordered this), and pigs rolled in a blanket,  in addition to some veggies, nuts, and appropriate colored candies.

I also made the chocolate mortarboards, which were a big hit. Once you give up on finding the perfect colored "tassels"  they were pretty easy and make a big impact.

We had Pimm's Cup (not yet made in this picture) and a prosecco toast for drinks (nice and light for a hot day).

And here's the food table-- styled a la Amy Atlas! You can see the orange candies-- orange slices and reece's pieces!

I can't let guests leave empty handed-- and I hate to have tons of food leftover after a party...so I gave each guest a cupcake for an after dinner treat.

I got the cupcake boxes and black and white bakers twine from cdkane on etsy -- she was great to work with, and cheaper than any bake shop in NYC!

But...the boxes were a little big for my homemade cupcakes. I didn't want the cupcakes to rattle around while the guests traveled, so I used a small piece of stik-tak (available at any hardware store). A tiny bit of tack kept the cupcakes centered with all of their frosting intact! Guests said the cupcakes made it home in perfect form!

Graduation 2010 - One Smart Cookie

It is graduation season again, and it's time to break out of the luau theme. Do you have a smart cookie graduating this year? Well then, let the world know with a cookie-themed soiree!
