Patricia Urquiola: Vieques Island

An earlier post at 2Modern design blog covered Patricia Urquiola's tile work which was delightful! Her focus on creating industrial products with personality and her approach to integrate layers of history into the memoriable patterns surely trigger sensation and success.

Patricia Urquiola's advise for new designers is to find “a few cultural references and people who can give you guidance to develop your personality,  try to defend your ideas and projects, create your own formula.”

She created a great formula for herself; her interiors are sensible, orginal and moving. The colors are plenty but they are relative and pleasing within the context of its surrounding.

The dynamics of colors in Urquiola's interiors can be explained by intuition and observation.

Vieques island

The corners are created with a sense of comfort which drives its energy from colors, lighting and patterns.

Viequesoutdoor

The outdoor furniture fits well into the nature's color scheme and also constitutes a lively drop within the earthy tones of the outdoor structure.

Vieques_mix

The colors of the pillows intensify each other with hues that complement and contrast in design. The lightness of colors gets affected by neighboring tones. The light source brightens the overall affect.

Viequeslivingroom

The colors and patterns in the living room are not used in a limited manner.

The color design develops around the amount, shape and placement of each design element in an interactional manner: The relativity makes the design pleasant and harmonious.

Modern Kids/Baby Gear

This weekend was one of my best-friend's baby shower.

The time is coming where many friends are married; this is the fourth baby of the year.  All these showers have forced me to learn about all cacophony of baby gear that parents seemingly need.

I am on a never-ending search for GREAT baby products.  They most certainly exist and really are show-stoppers!  I am always looking for products that I can feel excited about finding, giving, and using.

Below are two products that I find unique, modern, and a worthy read.

Artist Designed Mini-Golf a new fad?

Through September 16, the Salt Lake Art Center boasts 19 holes of indoor mini golf - a great way to beat the heat. Club sizes come in mini through tall adult and you can pick any golf ball color you would like, they have a rainbow of choices.

SaltLakeArtCenter

19 artists from Utah and the rest of the country designed and built the 18 holes.  The exhibit is free and you can play each of the holes!

The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis did a course in 2008 - article about it here.

  Walker

Back in March 2010, students at the Columbus College of Art and Design built a course that "nclude[d] a scale model of CCAD's campus created by its students and a pirate ship by Indianapolis arts group Primary Colors, along with others that incorporate electricity, game show reverence, bad family photos, comic book panels and... a waterfall. (Holes that incorporated fire, glass bottles and gigantic ladyparts made of green carpet were nixed from the course,)" said Columbus Alive.

The most interesting part of the article for me was this excerpt, "Future plans for a throwdown among the city's various art schools are in the works,"

As an art school graduate myself, I suspect that a throwdown between students can only result in huge leaps in innovation within art making.

Art can definitely be fun for the whole family! Go see some now!

The Golden Door open until September 6 only!

There is a very special mini golf course in Hamilton Square, Jersey City, NJ and it is only up for a few more weeks. It is open to the public dawn-thru-dusk. This project was curated by Christina Vassallo

and includes:
Victoria Colabro

Asha Ganpat

Darren Jones

Hiroshi Kumagai

Rapha Cycling Classics Visit NYC for 3 months

A Day in 10 Photos 07.01.2010 by John Prolly.

Rapha Cycle Club, NYC by dowd/hewitt.

Rapha a British based maker of cycling clothing and gear in classical style has decided to give its NY audience a hands on experience of their gear and aesthetic. In saying hands on we mean the full blown experience including Tour de France memorabilia, their vintage Citroen delivery van from Europe, complete with Rapha logo on it's side, gobs of Eddy Merckx memorabilia, a generous collection of their cycling clothing hung on racks for touching (not just on an LED screen!), and a coffee bar serving Third Rail Coffee with flat screen tvs showing continual coverage, live and video loops, of this years Tour de France! As a cyclist one might think that heaven has come to earth if only for a 3 month period of time disappearing all too quickly like Shangrala or Oz and then puff in a cloud of smoke back to Kansas. If you are in NYC, are madly passionate about cycling and cycle racing go quickly to the Bowery, take a seat, get a coffee, and let your head float off into the mountains of France while dreaming of winning this stages jersey, hopefully one made by Rapha.

Here they come! by will_cyclist.

i-phone art

Through out history artist have been drawn to emerging technology as a medium for artistic expression.  So it should come as no surprise that artists are now turning their attention to the i-phone.

The software artist known as Lia, has curated an on-line collection of i-phone apps created by software artists who explore the possibilities of hand-held interactivity at iphoneart.org.

Though some of these apps may feel like video games, they challenge our expectations by engaging us aesthetically under the Trojan horse of interactive fun.

Shape Up or ship out.

The Shape Up! alarm clock is perfect for folks like me who go into autopilot when reaching for the snooze button 15 times before actually getting up. With this clever little alarm clock, now I'll have get up quick and crank out 30 curls to make the alarm shut off. Pretty cool idea.
