Design Files: Lazzarini Pickering Architettie

The next time I find myself on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia (hopefully, it will be in this lifetime), I will pull up a seat to this absolutely gorgeous, sleek and serene restaurant, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar , designed by award-winning architectural/design firm, Lazzirini Pickering.

The firm has designed everything from apartments in Prague to Fendi storefronts in Paris and homes in the hilly terrains of Tuscany, but this restaurant is my absolute favorite.  The location is beyond serene and beachy, yet the design of this restaurant is modern, fresh and it actually looks comfortable.  The company has been designing retail, restaurant and hotel projects around the world for almost 20 years now, and from the looks of, they have many more beautiful projects ahead of them.

Trykk Wall Hook :: Tuyo Design

I'm a total sucker for creative, thoughtful, and unique storage solutions, which is why I got so excited when I saw the Trykk wall hook system from Tuyo Design.  The wooden panel consists of multiple sections that flip forward as needed, providing hooks for hats, scarves, purses, or jackets. 

The system is modular, so you can add to it and expand it as you see fit.  When it's not being used to hang stuff, it functions as an interesting focal point.  Multiple units together would certainly make a beautiful (and functional) statement, don't you think?

Mail Me Mailbox

The Mail Me Mailbox designed by designed by Fabrica for BD Barcelona will hopefully inspire the sending of love letters, printed invitations, birthday cards or something colorful in the mail other than bills bills bills.    Of course that would be retro thinking for a forward looking mailbox in this age of internet mania.    I am all for it.   Whether retro or modern, either way, these fun colors are a definite improvement from shades of dull. 

Have an infinitely modern day!

2Modern Design Brief

Do you ever feel like you see a recurring theme in design which in turn inspires you? Not a 'trend' per say...something you happen to notice... consistently in a short period of time...and you find yourself hooked?

 

I attended the Newport Beach Flim Festival this weekend and saw a short on the making and design of the Aqua building in Chicago. 

A collaborative effort headed and designed by Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects. 

I knew of this building...How could you miss it if you visited Chicago in recent years. What's neat about good documentaries is getting the real dirt of a story and leaving with a sense of inspiration.

 

And then Cribcandy featured this table by Vercelli and this layered, topographical design resonated with me again...

 

Something I had not thought of but like...plate by kyouei design. The texture possibilities with this design inspiration are endless!

 

hm..and then this chair by James Doulas...curiouser, and curiouser...

 

This Stalac table by The Practice Of Everyday Design is still one my favorite finds in recent months. Can't wait to see what this design team has up their sleeves. They are pumping out very innovative concepts right out of University... 

Music and Modern

We love modern architecture like any other design lover, but sometimes feel the look of it gets a bit generic. That's why we gasped when we came across the fun additions to a grammy-awarding winning artist's residence by local Austin architect Mark Meyer, of designSTUDIO.

The unique additions to this residence really show the homeowner's personality, and we love all the simple but effective design details that make this modern addition one-of-a-kind. Ink Dish on 2Modern

2Modern is proud to introduce Ink Dish, beautiful modern dinnerware designed by cutting edge artists Paul Timman (of Sunset Strip Tattoo) and Alyson Fox. The Cherry Ink Mug uses the sumi style of Japanese Tattooing, a delicate painterly style where soft edges replace black outlines. The Tribal Lines Side Plate is a modern black and white pattern that echoes the feel of Maori and Polynesian design. The gift sets, such as the May 4 Side Plate Gift Set, come boxed with a biography of the artist.

Papillon Chair

mater launched this Papillon stitched chair in Milan designed by Jasper Overgaard and Christian Dyrman. I really like the airy feel of this new chair from the ethical sustainable danish company.

Can on chair change the world? Maybe not, but it can improve the life of the people making it and show how a product can be made with respect for the nature.

iRetro

If you find yourself saying, "Man, my iPhone is just too new school and cutting edge!" Well, now I've found just the thing for you to breathe a sigh of relief... The iRetrofone Base.

This resin-molded phone base, inspired by Henry Dreyfuss' iconic rotary phone design, lets you dock your iPhone, route your USB through it to sync to your computer, and use a reciever to make your calls.

Limber Timber Lighting

For a desk lamp with a difference, design and architecture studio TAF have created the beautifully simple Wood Lamp for Scandinavian company Muuto. The low-tech pine lamp features an exposed cord and expressed joints in an unapologetically functionalist form.

 

 

As with much good design, the end result seems so simple and blindingly obvious that it's easy to overlook the perfect proportions or underestimate the fine craftsmanship, but as many designers would know, it takes a lot of hard work to look this effortless.
